This refuge is the best! During the migration season there are thousands of cranes to view from large well kept parking lots (with marked viewing areas) in which most have a portable toilet so you can stay in the field. Direction signs are excellent and there is a loop drive located behind their administration building. Most personnel donate the knowledge and skills to the town’s annual crane festival. The refuge farms provide grain for the migrating cranes and also provide the biggest bird feeder known to mankind - thank you wildlife refuge!

I really enjoyed my visit. It is worth going to even if it isn’t the time of the year the cranes are there. It is a very peaceful and beautiful place to walk and think and just enjoy the birds.

We went in March and took our kids down the walking trail as well as the auto route. We enjoyed seeing tracks on the path and the kids found it hilarious you could see where poop drops in the snow. We saw several groups of ducks, geese, and other birds, but If it's not the right time of year I'm sure its barren. We threw snowballs on the path and had a gorgeous view all around us. Great drive by spot for wild birds and pretty views.

Beautiful and peaceful place to see the birds - but go to the map point for the visitor center. If you go to this location, it takes you to a random spot on the road. The other spot takes you to a driving and walking loop.

Beautiful day in the refuge. Tons of Sandhill Cranes. Huge flocks flying in and out. Mountain scenery and just gorgeous skies. Nice loop around lakes as well as pullouts along the highway edge. Spotted a pair of Great Horned Owls as well. Lots more cranes this year. Great views of Sangre de Cristo Mountains!

If you like to see the sandhill cranes then this is a great spot. The viewing areas off of the road to the south of the center are the best. Recommend the east side as they tend to be closer.

If there are not many there, try and wait a bit as they tend to fly around and congregate at different places.

Came down with the family on Spring Break to see the Sandhill Cranes. My wife is the crazy bird lady. I do enjoy their pleasing chirps as they flock overhead. Gale force winds were whipping up the sand something fierce that day filtering the sunlight with an eerie ambiance. The Refuge is open for visitors one hour before sunrise and closes one hour after sunset. There’s a pit toilet here but that’s about it (other than the wildlife, of course).
